Families often bring food as a symbolic offering of gratitude, respect, and Dana (generosity) to the Buddha and the deceased.
These offerings are placed before the onaijin (altar) to signify thankfulness for the life of the loved one and the teachings of the Dharma. After the service, it is shared with the Sangha.

Family Memorial Service 法事
The family memorial service differs from other services as arrangements are made privately and are limited to family, relatives, and friends.
The first three family memorial services are held on or around the 7th, 49th, and 100th day after the day of death. Thereafter, services are observed near the date of death during specified years, though some families hold a memorial service every year.
